Digital Art Preservation and Open Formats

Italy's centuries-old tradition of art preservation meets the digital age. Why open file formats are essential for ensuring that digital artwork survives technological change.

Italy has spent centuries preserving art. From the meticulous restoration of Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel ceiling to the ongoing conservation of Pompeii's frescoes, the country understands better than most that great work must be actively maintained to survive. But as creative work moves increasingly into digital formats, a new preservation crisis is emerging, and it has nothing to do with humidity or ultraviolet light. It has to do with file formats.

The Digital Decay Problem

A fresco painted on a church wall in 1400 is still viewable today because the medium is stable and the substrate is durable. A digital artwork created in a proprietary format in 2005 may already be unreadable. The software that created it may have been discontinued. The company that made it may no longer exist. The format specification may never have been published. Unlike physical art, where degradation is gradual and often reversible, digital art can become completely inaccessible overnight when the software ecosystem that supports it disappears.

This is not a theoretical concern. Entire archives of digital art from the early 2000s exist on hard drives in formats that no current software can open. Projects created in discontinued tools are effectively lost, not because the files are corrupted, but because no living application understands how to interpret them.

What Italy Teaches Us

Italian conservators operate on a principle that digital tool makers should adopt: the preservation of a work must not depend on any single institution, technology, or individual. When restorers work on a Renaissance painting, they document every material used, every technique applied, and every decision made. The documentation itself becomes part of the preservation record, ensuring that future conservators can understand and continue the work.

The digital equivalent of this principle is open file formats. When a file format is fully documented, publicly specified, and free to implement, it can survive the death of any single software product. Anyone can write a reader for it. Anyone can build tools around it. The work encoded in that format is not dependent on any company's continued existence or goodwill.

Open Formats in Practice

The creative industry already has strong open standards. glTF 2.0, maintained by the Khronos Group, has become the universal interchange format for 3D content. SVG handles vector graphics. PNG and EXR handle raster images at different fidelity levels. WAV and FLAC handle audio without lossy compression. These formats are not just convenient; they are acts of preservation. A glTF file created today will be readable decades from now because the specification is public and the format is implemented in hundreds of tools.

The Long View

Physical art in Italy has survived wars, floods, earthquakes, and centuries of political upheaval because people chose to preserve it. Digital art will only survive if we make the same deliberate choice. Open file formats are the foundation of that choice. They ensure that the creative work being produced today, in all its diversity and ambition, will be accessible to future generations regardless of which software companies survive and which do not. Italy's conservation tradition reminds us that preservation is not passive. It requires intentional decisions made at the moment of creation, not after the damage is done.
